Difference between Category vs Application

Hi Netskoper

I will like to allow Reddit for “BROWSE and DOWNLOAD” and not worry about URL updated when change.

In SWG, I can use Application=Reddit, but there was no “BROWSE”

 

If I will to use custom Category, I can see “BROWSE and DOWNLOAD” but I have to keep monitoring if the URL has change.

 

I like to know what is the difference between Category vs Application? When should I use them effectively?

You can achieve that by selecting

  • Application=Reddit
  • Activity=Upload
  • Action=Block

@munster, as @ejang pointed out you can achieve this with the reverse logic (block the activities you want to prohibit and an implicit allow will handle allowing Browse and Download) but what you’re requesting is also possible if you have a stricter policy requirement using CCI App Tags and categories.  Start by tagging the app in the CCI:

 


Then create a Real-time Protection policy scoped to the category (Social in this case) with the tag you created:
